Our story
Born and raised in Kanagawa, Japan, Chef Yanagi developed a passion for food at a young age. At 18, he began apprenticing as a sushi chef, embarking on a culinary journey that took him from Japan to New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Texas. After 30 years perfecting his craft, Chef Yanagi met Chef Suzuki, the esteemed owner of a beloved Long Island City restaurant who was preparing to retire. Chef Yanagi soon took over the restaurant, continuing its legacy.
Chef Yanagi recognized that sushi was often overpriced, making it inaccessible to many. He dreamed of creating a restaurant where authentic, beautifully crafted sushi could be enjoyed by everyone without pretentious prices, just as it is in Japan. This vision inspired our concept: "Sushi for the People."
Now, we are here in Long Island City serving Sushi and Ramen to carry on the legacy of Suzuki Shokudo with Chef Yanagi's unique touch. This includes revising the menu, adding new items, appetizers, seasonal specials, and chef recommendations like the A-La-Carte Sushi "Double Toro," which features aged fatty tuna topped with fresh toro. We are dedicated to serving the community in the heart of Long Island City, Astoria, and Woodside, offering a new insight to enjoy Sushi and Ramen in a different way.
